CAR THEFT
A Swallowfield resident recently had his car stolen - they entered through an open window and stole the keys and then the car.
Modern vehicles are very hard to steal so criminals will go to great lengths to get the hold of the keys.

> Always remove the keys when you re-fill the vehicle, and lock the vehicle before going to pay or sign for the fuel.
> Never leave a vehicle unattended with the engine running, even in your own front drive. There is always a peak in vehicle thefts in winter because people start the engine up and leave it running to warm the vehicle while they and pop back inside where it is warm. Thieves love pre-warmed cars.
> Do not leave keys on display at home, or in the workplace: Thieves have been known to use fishing rods to steal keys through letter boxes and to scoop up keys from office desks or shop counters as they pass. If you do not want to keep your keys on your person, put them somewhere out of sight in a place that is not obvious - handbags and jacket pockets are the first place a theif will look.
> Do not put the full registration number on any key tag – if the keys get lost anyone finding them can easily identify the vehicle and steal it. When vehicles come back from servicing remove the garage label as this will usually have the full vehicle number and other useful details such as the model, colour and your name written on it.
